Just scored some new running shoes... a set of phone dial wheels with R-compound 225/50-15s.

Granted, I already have some R-compounds and phone dials, but this setup has some advantages. First, the new tires are in much better shape. Second, the new wheels don't need to be stripped/repainted. And lastly, they're already mounted.

I should be picking them up next week.

It's a good thing I brought the Porsche in when I did! It turns out that my #1 bearing was in very bad shape. Had I not decided to track the car, I wouldn't have had the bearings replaced, and it would have likely spun on me shortly.

Ironically enough, the decision to race the car will likely save me money...

Got my helmet and new wheels/tires so I'm ready to rock!

I'm probably going to repaint the wheels, tho, but that'll wait 'til it warms up.

I added a front lip a few days back, made from quality garden edging!

But hey, it looks good and lines up with the 951 rocker extensions. No clue if it actually does anything for performance. Theoretically, yes. But the car is already dead stable so the butt dyno doesn't really feel anything.

I test fitted/drove the R-compounds today, just to make sure they were all kosher.

In addition to the wide, sticky rubber, their diameter is an inch smaller than stock. This essentially lowers the car by a half-inch and also gives me shorter gearing and better braking. And I'm not normally one for black wheels, but I think the car pulls them off quite nicely.

How significant is the difference between R-compound rubber and regular tires?

Well, after lugging them back upstairs, I can safely say that the R-compound tires are much heavier, despite being overall smaller. <pant>

In my case, I didn't really push it that hard, although the car almost felt a bit wallowey from the extra body roll I was able to get. However, in the past the R-compounds have been a huge, huge difference. Back in my autocross days, they'd say that the R-compounds were worth a good two seconds off your time. Which is no small thing.
