The Commander does have some very decent room inside. 7 passengers if you pull up the last two seats... only used them a few times, or you can fold down all but the front seats and fit plenty of cargo.
Like I said when I bought the thing... you can carry tons of stuff, or lots of people, but not both.
I think it would definitely work for her situation. Even with the 3.7L it has enough power for rough roads and even plenty of capability off road. I was out driving during, and immediately after, all three major snowstorms in the past year and NEVER had a single problem with it. It has been unstoppable up to this point. But I will concede that driving in the snow is equally about skill as it is about the vehicle's capability. The road feel is also quite nice and drives like a car... a big one, but it is always a pleasure to drive.
